Is This The Real World

Writer / Director: Martin McKenna

Producers: Deborah Barlow, Martin McKenna, Alison Telford

Genre: Drama

Stars: Sean Keenan, Charlotte Best, Matt Colwell (360), Suzie Porter, Julia Blake, Greg Stone

Featuring a smouldering performance by emerging star Sean Keenan (Puberty Blues, Glitch), Martin McKenna's debut feature is a slow-burn journey into the mind of a 17 year-old, and a piercingly real portrait of a family on the edge.

Mark Blazey is a high school kid who's going to stay young...even if it kills him. Growing up in an Australian coastal town, Mark locks into a relentless battle of wills with a controlling teacher, while his family is breaking apart, and first love is beating at his door.

Synopsis

17 year-old Mark Blazey doesn't want to live in the real world. In the real world you can't just do what you want. In the real world you have to compromise.

Mark is a smart kid from a chaotic family who has just thrown away a scholarship to a private school and found himself at the local high, to the dismay of his mother and grandma. His single-parent mother Anna, is struggling to keep the family together and protect her young daughter while older brother Jimmy is on a path back to jail.

When Mark finds his first real love Kim, he tries to escape all the forces in his life with her. It’s a typically impulsive plan of a teenage male on the cusp of adulthood, only compounded by the fact that Kim’s father is Mark’s new high school principle, Mr Rickard.

Released to Australian cinemas on June 2, 2016.
